KUARI PASS TREK
The Kuari Pass trek, also known as the Lord Curzon Trail, is one of the most picturesque treks in Uttarakhand, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, adventure, and cultural richness. Nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas, kuari pass trek takes you through dense forests of oak and rhododendron, charming meadows (called ‘bugyals’), and remote villages that showcase the unique lifestyle of the local people. The highlight of the Kuari Pass trek is the breathtaking panoramic view of some of the most iconic Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Dronagiri, Kamet, and Trishul.
The trek begins from Joshimath, a popular gateway to the Himalayas, and leads trekkers through serene landscapes, crossing rivers and walking along ridgelines with majestic mountain backdrops. It’s a moderate-level trek suitable for beginners and experienced trekkers alike, offering a wonderful opportunity to witness the beauty of the high-altitude mountains without being too physically demanding. The best time to undertake the Kuari Pass trek is during the summer (April to June) and post-monsoon (September to November) when the skies are clear, and the mountains stand tall against a backdrop of azure skies. Kuari pass trek is ideal for those looking to immerse themselves in the tranquil beauty of the Himalayas while experiencing the vibrant culture and warm hospitality of Uttarakhand.
ITINERARY
- Distance: 256 km, 8-9 hours drive
- Altitude: 1,875 m
Begin the journey from Rishikesh early in the morning. The scenic drive takes you along the banks of the Ganga and Alaknanda rivers, passing through important towns such as Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Karnaprayag, known for their river confluences. The changing landscapes, from lush green valleys to the towering mountains, make this drive a beautiful experience. Arrive in Joshimath by evening and check into a guesthouse for the night. Spend the evening acclimatising to the altitude and preparing for the kuari pass trek ahead.
- Drive: 12 km, 45 minutes
- Trek: 6 km, 4-5 hours
- Altitude Gain: 1,875 m to 2,800 m
After breakfast, drive to Dhak village, the starting point of kuari pass trek. From here, the trek ascends gradually through picturesque terraced fields, small villages, and oak and rhododendron forests. As you climb, the views of Dronagiri Peak start emerging, offering a glimpse of the grandeur that lies ahead. After 4-5 hours of trekking, arrive at Gulling, where you’ll set up camp amidst lush greenery and sweeping mountain vistas. Enjoy a hot meal and rest under the stars in your tent.

- Altitude Gain: 2,800 m to 3,500 m
Today’s trek takes you deeper into the heart of the Garhwal Himalayas. The trail passes through dense forests and opens up into expansive meadows. The ascent is steady, with occasional breaks offering breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks, including Hathi-Ghoda and Dronagiri. As you reach Tali, you’ll be welcomed by a serene campsite set near a tranquil lake. This is a great place to rest and absorb the pristine beauty of the mountains. Set up camp for the night and enjoy a hearty meal as you settle in for a night in the wilderness.
- Trek: 13 km, 7-8 hours
- Altitude Gain: 3,500 m to 3,650 m
After an early breakfast, embark on the trek towards Kuari Pass, the highlight of the journey. The trail traverses high-altitude meadows, offering some of the best panoramic views of the Garhwal Himalayas. From Kuari Pass, you’ll witness an uninterrupted view of towering peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kamet, and Neelkanth. After soaking in the majestic scenery and capturing some unforgettable photos, descend back to Tali via the same route. Spend the night at Tali, reflecting on the day’s adventure under a starlit sky.

- Drive: 12 km, 45 minutes
- Altitude Loss: 3,500 m to 1,875 m
Start your descent from Tali after breakfast. Retrace your steps through the forested trails and meadows, enjoying the views of the lower valley and surrounding peaks as you make your way back to Dhak. Once you reach Dhak village, a short drive will take you back to Joshimath. Upon arrival in Joshimath, check into a guesthouse for the night. This evening, you can explore Joshimath, visit the ancient Narasimha Temple, or relax after completing the trek.
- Distance: 256 km, 8-9 hours drive
After breakfast, begin the return journey to Rishikesh. The scenic drive follows the same route along the Ganges and its tributaries, offering stunning views of the mountains, valleys, and confluences. Arrive in Rishikesh by late evening, marking the end of your Kuari Pass adventure. You can choose to spend the night in Rishikesh and explore the town’s famous ashrams, temples, and the iconic Ganga Aarti, or head home.

- Accommodation: Guesthouse accommodation in Joshimath for 2 nights (Day 1 and Day 5). Camping accommodation during the trek (3 nights) in tents (on twin/triple sharing basis).
- Meals: All meals during the kuari pass trek (Day 2 to Day 5) – Breakfast, lunch, and dinner (vegetarian). Breakfast on Day 6 before departure from Joshimath.
- Transport: Transport from Rishikesh to Joshimath and back in a shared vehicle. Internal transfers between Joshimath and Dhak (trek starting/ending point) and back.
- Trekking Gear: Sleeping bags and insulated sleeping mats. - Camping equipment including tents, dining tent, toilet tent. Crampons, gaiters, and trekking poles (if needed during the trek).
- Guide and Support Staff: Experienced and certified trek leader. Local guides with in-depth knowledge of the terrain. Porters/mules to carry common equipment and camping gear. Support staff (cook, helpers) to prepare and serve meals.
- Permits and Forest Entry Fees: All necessary forest permits and camping charges. Entry fees for Kuari Pass Trek and related trekking permits.
- First Aid and Safety Equipment: Basic first aid kit with essential medicines. Oxygen cylinders and pulse oximeters for high-altitude safety. Trek leader trained in first aid and emergency response.
EXCLUSIONS
- Travel to Rishikesh: Any transportation to and from Rishikesh (to the starting point of the kuari pass trek) from your hometown.
- Meals in Transit: Meals during the drive from Rishikesh to Joshimath (Day 1) and from Joshimath to Rishikesh (Day 6).
- Personal Expenses: Personal trekking gear (trekking shoes, jackets, clothing, etc.). Insurance of any kind, including travel, health, and accidental insurance. Any expenses for additional services like laundry, phone calls, etc.
- Personal Luggage: Porter services for carrying personal luggage. (Available at an additional cost if required).
- Medical and Emergency Costs: Costs for evacuation or medical assistance in case of emergency. Any medical expenses related to injuries or altitude sickness during the trek.
- Miscellaneous: Any kind of alcoholic beverages or soft drinks. Tips for the trek leader, guides, or support staff (optional but appreciated). Any costs arising due to unforeseen conditions like landslides, roadblocks, bad weather, or other natural calamities.
THINGS TO CARRY
Clothing:
- Base Layer (Thermal Wear): 2 pairs of moisture-wicking thermal tops and bottoms for insulation.
- Trekking Shirts: 2-3 full-sleeve dry-fit shirts or quick-dry t-shirts to keep you comfortable.
- Trekking Pants: 2 pairs of quick-dry trekking pants. Avoid jeans or cotton pants.

HOW TO REACH
By Air:
- The nearest airport to the Kuari Pass trek is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun, located about 20 km from Rishikesh.
- From Delhi: Daily flights are available from Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi to Dehradun. The flight duration is around 1 hour.
- After reaching Dehradun, you can either take a taxi or bus to Rishikesh, which is a 45-minute drive.
- You will then proceed from Rishikesh to Joshimath (as outlined in the itinerary) to begin your trek.
By Train:
- The nearest railway station to Kuari Pass trek is Haridwar Railway Station, around 25 km from Rishikesh.
- From Delhi: There are several trains from New Delhi Railway Station to Haridwar, including:
- Shatabdi Express (5-hour journey)
- Mussoorie Express (overnight train)
- Nanda Devi Express
- After arriving at Haridwar, you can take a taxi or local bus to Rishikesh, a 45-minute drive.
- From Rishikesh, you will proceed to Joshimath by road to start the trek.
By Road:
- Rishikesh is well-connected by road to major cities in North India. You can either take a bus, taxi, or drive your own vehicle to Rishikesh.
- From Delhi: Rishikesh is about 240 km from Delhi, and it takes around 6-7 hours to reach by car or bus.
- Private buses and state-run buses (Uttarakhand Transport Corporation) ply regularly from Delhi ISBT (Kashmiri Gate) to Rishikesh. Choose an overnight bus for a convenient journey.
SAFETY & SECURITY
You should have the following safety advice in mind when trekking Kedarkantha:
- Always keep an altitude sickness medication in your first aid bag.
- Drink lots of water and other fluids to stay hydrated.
- Pay attention to your body and take pauses when required.
- Do not venture out alone; instead, obey your trekking guide’s recommendations.
- Show respect for the customs and culture of the area.

If your Kuari Pass Trek gets called off at the last moment due to a natural calamity/unforeseen circumstances (like rains, snowfall, earthquake, landslides, strike, bandh, etc.) we will not refund your money. Instead of money, Walking The Himalayas will issue a trek voucher for the full amount. You can easily redeem that voucher for the same amount for any of the treks available at the same price.

- If you cancel a trek before 30 days of trek start date and get a full refund after deduction of 1.99% payment processing fee.
- If you cancel a trek before 15 days of the trek start date and get a refund after a deduction of 20% of the total trek fee.
- If you cancel a trek before 10 days of the trek start date and get a refund after a deduction of 40% of the total trek fee.
- If you cancel a trek before 5 days of the trek start date and get a refund after a deduction of 60% of the total trek fee.
- The Trek fee is non-refundable if you cancel within 4 days before the trek start date.
Trek cancellation due to weather:
- In case of an incomplete trek due to weather conditions, you can opt for the same trek again throughout your lifetime on all our fixed departures for the same trek.
- This attempt only covers the trek fee and will not include any rentals or the transportation amount paid earlier.
- This is non-transferable.
FAQs
The best time for the Kuari Pass trek is during the summer months (April to June) and post-monsoon months (September to November). During these periods, the weather is pleasant, and the skies are clear, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. In winter (December to February), Kuari Pass is covered in snow, making it a different yet beautiful experience for trekkers.
The Kuari Pass trek is considered an easy to moderate trek. It’s suitable for beginners with a basic level of fitness. The trails are well-marked and the ascents are gradual, making it accessible for those new to high-altitude trekking.
The trek covers a distance of about 33 km, and the total duration is 5 days including travel from and to Rishikesh. On trekking days, you will walk between 6-13 km per day depending on the altitude and terrain.
Prior trekking experience is not mandatory for the Kuari Pass trek. However, a basic fitness level is required, as you will be walking at high altitudes for multiple hours each day. It is recommended to start physical preparation a few weeks before the trek.
The highest point on the Kuari Pass trek is Kuari Pass, which is located at an altitude of 3,650 meters (11,975 feet)
Accommodation will be in guesthouses or hotel in Joshimath (before and after the trek), and tents during the trek (on twin or triple sharing basis). The camping setup includes sleeping bags, mats, and insulated tents.
Temperatures can range from 12°C to 20°C during the day, while at night, it can drop to -2°C to 5°C. In winter months, temperatures can go below -5°C. It’s essential to carry warm layers, including thermals, fleece, and down jackets.
You will be provided with vegetarian meals throughout the trek. The food is nutritious and simple, including items like rice, chapati, dal, vegetables, soups, and snacks. Hot tea and drinks will also be provided at regular intervals.
Mobile network connectivity is limited during the trek. You may get some signal in Joshimath and the initial part of the trek, but as you ascend towards higher campsites, the signal becomes weak or unavailable.
You should carry warm clothing, waterproof jackets, trekking shoes, personal toiletries, and basic medication. A full list of things to carry is provided in detail, ensuring you are well-prepared for the trek.
