KEDARKANTHA TREK
Kedarkantha Trek, situated in Garhwal Region of Uttarakhand, is a winter trek which is known for its captivating adventure throughout the trek. In kedarkantha trek you will experience panoramic views of some Himalayan peaks, which includes Swargarohini, Bandarpooch, and the Black Peak. The trek takes you through dense forest of pine and oak, serene meadows blanketed in snow, and villages seem frozen in time. The trail is often covered in snow during winters which gives you a winter wonderland experience. The Kedarkantha Trek is a natural beauty in itself. Where you will experience nature’s untouched splendor. As you ascend in kedarkantha trek, you’ll experience forest which are rich in biodiversity, various species of birds which will mesmerising for a bird watcher.
Our first campsite at Juda ka talab is a high altitude lake surrounded by pine trees. At the time of winter the lake often freezes. The kedarkantha base camp which is located higher up from Juda ka Talab provides you some spectacular views of Kedarkantha peak. Which gives you a glimpse of the kedarkantha summit which excites and motivate you to conquer it. Next is our Kedarkantha summit climb, the final ascent begins early at 2:30 in the morning to catch sunrise from the kedarkantha summit. This trek is quite challenging but rewarding. You can make your own way through snow covered trails to reach kedarkantha summit. At top, the view is just spectacular, with golden rising sun through a huge range of Himalayas gives a sense of accomplishment which is an unforgettable experience for you.

ITINERARY
Altitude: 6,400 feet
Time: 8-9 hours drive
Overnight stay: Guesthouse/Homestay in Sankri
The adventure begins from Dehradun, a bustling city and the capital of Uttarakhand. The day starts with a scenic drive from Dehradun to Sankri, the base village for the Kedarkantha trek. The journey covers approximately 200 kilometers, passing through charming hill towns such as Mussoorie, Naugaon, and Purola. The road winds along the banks of the Yamuna and Tons rivers, providing stunning views of terraced farmlands and dense pine forests. As you ascend towards Sankri, the landscape transforms into a more alpine setting, with towering pine trees and glimpses of snow-covered peaks in the distance. Sankri, located in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary, is a quaint village known for its picturesque beauty and rustic charm. After arriving in Sankri, trekkers can explore the village or relax in their accommodation, preparing for the trek ahead.
Altitude: 9,100 feet
Time: 4-5 hours trek
Overnight stay: Campsite at Juda Ka Talab
On the second day, the trekking adventure truly begins. After breakfast, you will leave Sankri and start your trek towards Juda Ka Talab, a high-altitude lake nestled amidst the pine forests. The trail initially winds through dense pine and oak forests, providing a cool, shaded path. As you ascend, you’ll pass through meadows dotted with small streams and clearings, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Juda Ka Talab is a serene lake that is often frozen during the winter months, surrounded by snow-draped pine trees. It’s a tranquil spot where you can rest and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of the mountains. The campsite is set up near the lake, and as the evening sets in, you can relax around a bonfire, sharing stories under the starry sky. The first night in the wilderness, surrounded by snow, is a memorable experience.
Altitude: 11,250 feet
Time: 3-4 hours trek
Overnight stay: Campsite at Kedarkantha Base Camp
The third day involves a relatively easy trek to the Kedarkantha Base Camp, which is located at a higher altitude. The trail takes you through more open spaces, allowing you to fully appreciate the grandeur of the surrounding mountains. The climb is gradual, and you will pass through beautiful snow-covered meadows and forests. As you approach the base camp, the Kedarkantha peak comes into view, looming majestically ahead. The base camp is one of the most scenic campsites on the trek, offering stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks, such as Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak. This spot is ideal for photography, as the landscape is bathed in the golden light of the setting sun. The night at the base camp is spent in tents, surrounded by the tranquility of the mountains. The cold, crisp air and the starry night sky create an unforgettable atmosphere.
Altitude: 12,500 feet (Summit), 8,900 feet (Hargaon)
Time: 7-8 hours trek
Overnight stay: Campsite at Hargaon
The fourth day is the most exhilarating part of the trek, as you ascend to the Kedarkantha summit. The day begins early, often before dawn, to witness the stunning sunrise from the summit. The trek to the top is steep and challenging, especially if there is fresh snow. However, the effort is rewarded with a 360-degree panoramic view of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks, with the golden rays of the sun illuminating the surrounding mountains. The Kedarkantha summit offers breathtaking views of peaks like Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Gangotri. After spending some time at the summit, soaking in the views and taking photos, you will begin your descent towards Hargaon. The descent is relatively easier and takes you through lush forests and snow-covered trails. Hargaon is a peaceful campsite located amidst dense pine trees. After the thrill of the summit, the night at Hargaon is a relaxing one, with trekkers reflecting on the day’s accomplishments.
Altitude: 6,400 feet
Time: 2-3 hours trek, 8-9 hours drive
On the final day, you will trek from Hargaon back to Sankri, passing through forested trails and clearings. The descent is quick and offers beautiful views of the valley below. After reaching Sankri, you will have some time to freshen up and explore the village before starting the return journey to Dehradun. The drive back is long but scenic, retracing the route through the pine forests and mountain villages. You’ll arrive in Dehradun by late evening, marking the end of a memorable adventure in the Himalayas.

HOW TO REACH
By Air:
- Nearest Airport: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun
- The nearest airport to Sankri is Jolly Grant Airport, located about 20 km from Dehradun city.
- There are daily flights from major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore to Dehradun.
- From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach Dehradun city, and from there, you can opt for a taxi or shared vehicle to Sankri. The distance from Dehradun to Sankri is about 200 km and takes approximately 8-9 hours by road.
By Train:
- Nearest Railway Station: Dehradun Railway Station
- Dehradun is well-connected by train to major cities like Delhi, Kolkata, and Lucknow.
- Several express and superfast trains run from New Delhi Railway Station to Dehradun, such as the Dehradun Express, Nanda Devi Express, and Shatabdi Express,
- From Dehradun Railway Station, you can hire a taxi, take a bus, or travel in a shared vehicle to Sankri. The drive from Dehradun to Sankri takes about 8-9 hours.
By Road:
- From Dehradun to Sankri (200 km, 8-9 hours)
- You can take a private taxi, shared cab, or public bus from Dehradun to Sankri. The route is scenic, passing through Mussoorie, Purola, and Mori, with mesmerizing views of the Himalayan landscape and river valleys.
- Private Taxis: Available from Dehradun, offering a convenient but more expensive option for direct travel to Sankri.
- Shared Taxis: Shared cabs are available from Dehradun, but may require waiting for the vehicle to fill up.
- Public Buses: Buses depart from the Mussoorie Bus Stand and ISBT Dehradun for Sankri. The buses are usually available early in the morning, and the journey takes around 10 hours.
By Bus:
- From Delhi to Dehradun (260 km, 6-7 hours)
- If you’re traveling from Delhi, you can take a direct bus from ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Dehradun. Buses run frequently throughout the day and night.
- Government-run buses (Volvo, deluxe, and ordinary) as well as private buses operate on this route.
- From Dehradun, you can catch a bus or hire a taxi to Sankri.
SAFETY & SECURITY
You should have the following safety advice in mind when trekking Kedarkantha:
