HAR KI DUN TREK
Har Ki Dun trek is one of the most scenic and culturally rich treks in Uttarakhand, offering trekkers a perfect blend of adventure and natural beauty. Nestled in the heart of the Garhwal Himalayas, this trek takes you through ancient villages, dense forests, and lush green meadows with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks. Known as the “Valley of Gods,” Har Ki Dun is steeped in mythology and history, believed to be the route taken by the Pandavas on their way to heaven. The trail is adorned with vibrant flora, crystal-clear streams, and an abundance of wildlife, making it a paradise for nature lovers and birdwatchers.
The trek, stretching over 6-7 days, starts from the quaint village of Sankri and leads you through charming hamlets like Taluka and Osla, where you can witness traditional wooden architecture and the unique culture of the local inhabitants. The journey culminates in the stunning Har Ki Dun valley, offering panoramic views of peaks like Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Kala Nag. ITINERARY
- Altitude: 1,950 meters
- Drive Time: 8-9 hours
- Route: Dehradun – Mussoorie – Nainbagh – Purola – Mori – Sankri
Depart early morning from Dehradun. The scenic drive will take you through Mussoorie and various villages, offering picturesque views of the Tons River and the surrounding mountains.
You will pass through lush forests and terraced fields. The roads are narrow and winding, enhancing the adventure as you enter deeper into the Garhwal Himalayas.
Arrive in Sankri, the base camp for the trek, by late afternoon. Sankri is a small, peaceful village surrounded by pine forests and offers views of snow-capped mountains.
In the evening, explore the village, acclimatize to the altitude, and enjoy a hearty meal before resting. - Overnight Stay: Guesthouse in Sankri.

- Trek Distance: 14 km
- Trek Time: 5-6 hours
- Route: Sankri – Taluka – Osla
After breakfast, take a short drive (about 1 hour) to Taluka, a small village from where the trek begins.
Start trekking along the banks of the Supin River, passing through thick forests of pine, cedar, and rhododendron. The trail is a mix of gradual ascents and descents, with several streams to cross.
The trail offers stunning views of waterfalls and terraced farmlands. You may also encounter local villagers and their livestock along the way.
Arrive at Osla, a quaint village known for its traditional wooden homes and the ancient Someshwar Mahadev temple. The village is steeped in mythological significance.
Set up camp near Osla and spend the evening interacting with the friendly villagers.

Begin your trek from Osla to the stunning Har Ki Dun valley. The trail ascends gradually, offering mesmerizing views of the surrounding peaks, including Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Kala Nag.
The trek takes you through green meadows, alpine forests, and alongside sparkling streams. On clear days, the trail offers panoramic views of snow-capped mountains.
As you approach Har Ki Dun, the valley opens up, revealing breathtaking views of lush meadows surrounded by towering peaks. This serene valley is often referred to as the “Valley of Gods.”
Reach the campsite at Har Ki Dun and spend the rest of the day exploring the valley. Relax amidst the scenic beauty, capturing incredible photographs of the Himalayan range.

- Altitude: 3,566 meters
Today is dedicated to exploring the beautiful Har Ki Dun valley and its surroundings. You can take a short hike to the Jaundhar Glacier, which offers stunning views of the glaciated peaks and dramatic landscapes.
Alternatively, visit Morinda Tal, a serene high-altitude lake, where the reflections of the surrounding peaks on the water are a sight to behold.
Spend the day soaking in the tranquility of the valley. With its scenic beauty, the valley is perfect for nature photography, birdwatching, and simply unwinding in nature.
In the evening, relax by the campsite and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of the valley.

- Route: Har Ki Dun – Osla
After breakfast, begin your descent from Har Ki Dun back to Osla. The return trek offers more time to appreciate the diverse flora and fauna of the region.
As you descend, you’ll pass through meadows and forests, with different views of the surrounding mountains. The lush greenery and flowing rivers create a peaceful and refreshing environment.
Reach Osla by early afternoon. After setting up camp, you can spend more time exploring the village or relaxing by the riverside.
Enjoy an evening around the campfire, sharing stories of the trek with fellow trekkers.

- Altitude: 1,950 meters
- Trek Distance: 14 km
- Trek Time: 5-6 hours
- Route: Osla – Taluka – Sankri
Begin your final trekking day, descending from Osla to Taluka. The route follows the same trail, offering a gentle downhill walk through the forests and along the Supin River.
Upon reaching Taluka, drive back to Sankri, where you can rest and reflect on your trekking experience.
The drive to Sankri will take around 1 hour. Once in Sankri, enjoy the evening at leisure, surrounded by the tranquility of the village.
If time permits, you can explore the local market or simply relax and enjoy the mountain views.
- Overnight Stay: Guesthouse in Sankri.
- Drive Time: 8-9 hours
- Route: Sankri – Mori – Purola – Dehradun
After breakfast, bid farewell to Sankri and begin the drive back to Dehradun.
Enjoy the scenic journey through pine forests, river valleys, and mountain roads. The return drive follows the same route via Mori and Purola.
Reach Dehradun by late afternoon, marking the end of your Har Ki Dun adventure.

- Accommodation: Guesthouse/homestay accommodation in Sankri on Day 1 and Day 6. Tented accommodation during the trek from Day 2 to Day 5 (Osla, Har Ki Dun). All accommodation is on a twin/triple sharing basis.
- Meals: All meals from dinner on Day 1 to breakfast on Day 7. Nutritious and hygienic vegetarian meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) throughout the trek. Tea, snacks, and soups during the trek.
- Transport: Transportation from Dehradun to Sankri and return as per the itinerary. Transfers from Sankri to Taluka and back in shared vehicles.
- Trek Guides and Support Staff: Experienced and certified trek leaders who are well-versed with the region and trail. Local support staff, including porters, cooks, and helpers. Mule/porter services to carry camping equipment and essentials.
- Permits and Entry Fees: All necessary permits and forest entry fees for the trek. Access to protected areas and restricted zones along the trek route.
- Camping Equipment: High-quality tents and sleeping bags (suitable for sub-zero temperatures). Foam mattresses and sleeping liners for comfort during the trek. Dining tents and toilet tents.
- First Aid and Safety: First-aid kit with necessary medications and oxygen cylinders for emergencies. Trek leader trained in handling medical situations and high-altitude trekking. Basic equipment like oximeters and portable oxygen cylinders for altitude checks.
- Miscellaneous: Camping charges at all designated campsites. Evening bonfires (wherever possible, based on weather and location).
EXCLUSIONS
- Personal Expenses: Any kind of personal expenses (e.g., mineral water, soft drinks, snacks). Personal porter or mule to carry your personal belongings (can be arranged at an additional cost). Tips for staff, guides, porters, or drivers.
- Travel to Dehradun: Travel costs to and from Dehradun (e.g., flights, train tickets, etc.) are not included. Any transportation beyond the itinerary.
- Insurance: Travel or trek insurance is not included. Participants are advised to have their own insurance covering medical, emergency evacuation, and trekking-related risks.
- Emergency Evacuation: Any costs incurred in case of emergency evacuation (due to injury, illness, natural calamities, etc.). Helicopter evacuation or any extra costs if the trek is shortened or extended.
- Unforeseen Expenses: Any costs arising due to unforeseen circumstances like landslides, bad weather, or natural disasters. Additional accommodation or transportation costs due to delays or changes in itinerary.
- Personal Equipment: Trekking gear like shoes, clothing, backpacks, trekking poles, etc. Personal toiletries and medications.
- Meals in Dehradun: Meals or snacks during the drive to/from Dehradun. Any meals in Dehradun before and after the trek.
- GST: Any applicable Goods and Services Tax (GST) on the trek cost, if not already included in the package price.
THINGS TO CARRY
Clothing:
- Trekking Shoes: Sturdy, waterproof, and high-ankle trekking shoes with a good grip are essential for navigating rocky, uneven terrain.
- Woolen Socks: 3-4 pairs of woolen socks to keep your feet warm during the trek. Also, carry a few pairs of cotton socks for daily use.
- Thermal Innerwear: A set of thermal inners to wear at night or during cold weather conditions.
- Trekking Pants: Quick-dry, comfortable, and weather-appropriate trekking pants. Avoid jeans. Carry 2-3 pairs.
- T-shirts: Lightweight, moisture-wicking, full-sleeve/half-sleeve t-shirts (2-3 pairs). Preferably carry quick-dry material.
- Insulating Layers: Fleece jackets or down jackets to keep you warm during the trek.
- Waterproof Jacket and Pants: A good-quality, windproof and waterproof jacket to protect you from rain and cold winds. Also, carry rain pants or a poncho.
- Warm Gloves: Woolen or fleece gloves to protect your hands from the cold.
- Cap or Hat: A sun cap for protection from the harsh sun during the day and a woolen cap or beanie for cold evenings.
Accessories:
- Backpack (40-60 liters): A sturdy, comfortable backpack with rain cover to carry your personal belongings.
- Daypack (20-30 liters): A small backpack for day trips if you’re not carrying the main one.
- Sunglasses: UV-protection sunglasses to shield your eyes from the strong sun at high altitudes. If trekking in snow, ensure they have anti-glare lenses.
- Sunscreen: SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin from sunburn at high altitudes.
- Lip Balm: Keep your lips moisturized to prevent dryness and chapping.
- Trekking Poles: Helpful for stability and support on uneven trails and during ascents and descents.
- Water Bottle or Hydration Pack: Carry a 1-2 liter water bottle or hydration system to stay hydrated throughout the trek.
- Headlamp or Torch: A headlamp with extra batteries for nighttime use and early morning hikes.
- Towel: A small, quick-dry towel.

HOW TO REACH
By Air:
Nearest Airport: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (Distance to Sankri: 220 km)
Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the nearest airport to Sankri. It is well-connected with direct flights from major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore.
From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a shared cab to reach Sankri, the base camp for the Har Ki Dun trek. The journey from Dehradun to Sankri takes about 8-9 hours by road.
By Train:
Nearest Railway Station: Dehradun Railway Station (Distance to Sankri: 200 km)
Dehradun railway station is well-connected to cities across India, including Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Amritsar.
Once you arrive at Dehradun railway station, you can hire a taxi or take a shared vehicle to Sankri. It’s an 8-9 hour drive through scenic routes with pine forests, rivers, and mountain views.
By Road:
From Dehradun:
The road journey from Dehradun to Sankri is about 200 km and takes approximately 8-9 hours.
You can hire a taxi, book a private vehicle, or take public buses that operate between Dehradun and Sankri.
From Delhi:
If you’re coming from Delhi, you can either take an overnight bus to Dehradun or drive directly to Sankri (430 km, approximately 10-11 hours). You can stop overnight in Dehradun and then proceed to Sankri the next day.
SAFETY & SECURITY
You should have the following safety advice in mind when trekking Kedarkantha:
- Always keep an altitude sickness medication in your first aid bag.
- Drink lots of water and other fluids to stay hydrated.
- Pay attention to your body and take pauses when required.
- Do not venture out alone; instead, obey your trekking guide’s recommendations.
- Show respect for the customs and culture of the area.

If your trek gets called off at the last moment due to a natural calamity/unforeseen circumstances (like rains, snowfall, earthquake, landslides, strike, bandh, etc.) we will not refund your money. Instead of money, Walking The Himalayas will issue a trek voucher for the full amount. You can easily redeem that voucher for the same amount for any of the treks available at the same price.

- If you cancel a trek before 30 days of trek start date and get a full refund after deduction of 1.99% payment processing fee.
- If you cancel a trek before 15 days of the trek start date and get a refund after a deduction of 20% of the total trek fee.
- If you cancel a trek before 10 days of the trek start date and get a refund after a deduction of 40% of the total trek fee.
- If you cancel a trek before 5 days of the trek start date and get a refund after a deduction of 60% of the total trek fee.
- The Trek fee is non-refundable if you cancel within 4 days before the trek start date.
Trek cancellation due to weather:
- In case of an incomplete trek due to weather conditions, you can opt for the same trek again throughout your lifetime on all our fixed departures for the same trek.
- This attempt only covers the trek fee and will not include any rentals or the transportation amount paid earlier.
- This is non-transferable.
