BRAHMATAL TREK
The Brahmatal trek, nestled in the heart of Uttarakhand, offers one of the most captivating winter trekking experiences in India. Situated at an altitude of approximately 12,250 feet, this trek combines the beauty of snow-clad mountains, serene alpine lakes, and dense forests. What makes Brahmatal truly special is the chance to witness the untouched splendor of the Himalayas in winter. From the moment trekkers set foot on the trail, they are greeted with breathtaking landscapes that shift between ancient oak and rhododendron forests to vast meadows blanketed in snow. As you ascend, the dense forests open up, unveiling sweeping views of some of the most revered peaks in the Himalayas, including Mount Trishul and Mount Nanda Ghunti. These snow-capped giants dominate the skyline, offering mesmerizing sights, especially at sunrise and sunset when the peaks glow golden in the light.
A major highlight of the Brahmatal trek is the pristine Brahmatal Lake itself. According to legend, this secluded lake is where Lord Brahma is said to have meditated, and standing by its tranquil shores, it’s easy to feel the spiritual ambiance that permeates the area. During winter, the lake often freezes over, creating a stunning mirror-like surface that reflects the surrounding snow-covered peaks. The trek also takes you to another high-altitude lake, Bekaltal, which, like Brahmatal, is encircled by forests and offers a peaceful stopover during the journey. The trail between these two lakes is dotted with unique flora and fauna, making it a paradise for nature lovers and photographers alike.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Brahmatal trek is the opportunity to trek through snow, especially between December and March. The thick snow blankets the landscape, turning it into a winter wonderland. The snow-covered meadows and forests add a magical touch to the already scenic trail. In addition, the open ridges and vantage points along the route provide uninterrupted views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges, making every step of the trek a visual treat. These panoramic vistas are most rewarding at the Brahmatal summit, where trekkers are greeted with 360-degree views of majestic peaks, rolling valleys, and the vast sky.
ITINERARY

The journey to Brahmatal begins with your arrival at Lohajung, a quaint village nestled in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. You will typically start from Rishikesh or Kathgodam (the nearest railway station), and the drive takes you through picturesque valleys, dense forests, and alongside rivers like the Pindar and Alaknanda. You will pass through various hill towns like Almora and Kausani, with magnificent views of the Nanda Devi and Trishul peaks. Once you reach Lohajung, you can relax and acclimatize to the higher altitude while enjoying the quiet village atmosphere. Lohajung serves as the base camp for the Brahmatal trek, and you will stay overnight in a guesthouse here.
Trek Distance: 6 km

After breakfast, the trek begins as you ascend from Lohajung toward Bekaltal. The trail starts with a gradual climb through forests of oak and rhododendron trees. As you walk deeper into the forest, you’ll encounter a variety of bird species and occasional glimpses of snow-covered peaks. The path is scenic and offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Midway, you will come across a small village called Mandoli, where you can take a short rest. Continuing through the lush greenery, you will eventually reach Bekaltal, a picturesque lake surrounded by dense forests. During winter, the lake may be partially frozen, making the campsite beside it a stunning spot to rest for the night.
